Barolo 2012

This was our first visit at Mauro Veglio in La Morra.

Mauro Veglio is situated as neighbor to Elio Altare, so it was quite easy to walk the 50 meters from Silvia Altare's presentation af Elio Altare's new vintage to the Veglio family.

As you can tell from the picture it was quite a happy and cosy afternoon in the late autumn - not to cold, not to hot for wine tasting.

Mauro and Daniela welcomed us with a very friendly attitude - like it is most common in the entire area.

Mauro Veglio's family have been farmers for many generations. Like many other families it started out by growing grapes for negociants in the area.

Like most grape producers Mauro Veglio found it unsatisfying to produce grapes at as low a price as possible without caring about the quality.

Mauro and his wife took over at the estate from Mauro's parents, and in 1992 Mauro decided to follow the example of his neighbor, Elio Altare.

He started to reduce the number og grapes per hectar drastically and started to vinify on his own in his new cantina.

Utilizing shorter macerations with temperature controlled rotary-fermenters and aging in small oak barrels, he started to produce, little by little, wines that were more elegant and less aggressive thanks to the reduced tannins even if the wines were more concentrated because of the higher quality grapes.

Mauro Veglio has approximately 12 hectares in the communes of La Morra and Monforte d'Alba and they produce around 60.000 bottles a year.

50% of the production is Barolo in the modern style (ageing in barrique).

This size allows Mauro to keep a direct control on all production processes, in the vineyards as well as in cellar, maintaining high quality and making necessary investments in new technology and machinery.

There are 4 different Crus of Barolo:

Arborina - La Morra
Rocche dellÂ’Annunziata - La Morra
Gattera - La Morra
Castelletto - Monforte dÂ’Alba (belonging to DanielaÂ’s Family). Barolo 2012

All the Barolo's are very different dispite 3 of them come from the same village - La Morra, but soil and climate do wonders before the grapes are transformed into wine...

On this day we were going to taste a variety of the producers different wine:

Dolcetto d'Alba 2011
Barbera d'Alba 2011
Barbera d'Alba Cascina Nuova 2010
L'Insieme 2010
Langhe Nebbiolo 2011
Barolo 2008
Barolo Arborina 2008
Barolo Gattera 2008
Barolo Castelletto 2008
Barolo Rocche dell'Annunciata 2008

Barolo 2012

All the Barolo's are aged in small oak caskeds and the same goes for Barbera d'Alba Cascina Nuova, while the simple Barbera d'Alba and Dolcetto d'Alba are aged in steel tank.

Something special is LÂ’Insieme, an assemblage of the best Nebbiolo and Barbera with Cabernet Sauvignon, that is a concrete symbol of friendship and cooperation between eight small producers of the Langhe.

This collaboration allows Mauro Veglio to look for a higher quality in the wines and through the Association LÂ’Insieme to collect funds for various social causes. Barolo 2012 Vinhulen.dk remember some earlier vintages of Mauro Veglio's Barolo's and it is clear to us that the generel quality is getting higher and higher for every vintage.

Along with that Mauro and Daniela are a very friendly and nice couple. We felt most welcome in their vinery.

If you have any doubt just look at the picture in top of this article.

We had the opportunity to taste the vintage 2008 Barolo's and Barbera d'Alba and Nebbiolo d'Alba in younger vintages.
